Discourse analysis from Cygnaeus Museums proposal

'''Preliminary study and research questions '''

1)The sensory experiences possible at art exhibits from noting the contents in a painting?

2)What does some of the artwork at Cygnaeus Gallery signify and what ideas are attached to the artwork?

3)The size of the museum and the exhibit size at Cygneaus Gallery affected my experiences at the museum and how?

==Organized Research ==

'''1a.'''The sensory experiences possible at the Cygnaeus Gallery from noting the contents in a painting are intense emotional reactions such as sadness, happiness or anger. I conducted my research by choosing two paintings that caught my eye and elicited a sensory reaction instantly. Then I wrote down the strongest sensory reaction I was experiencing. The title of the first painting that I used to answer this research question is “The Burnt Village” painted by Albert Edelfelt.

Sensory exsperiences for 1a.

Anger:In the painting their is a village in the distanse in flames a a group on horse back approaches the family hidden and hiding in a small enclave. I felt angry that the young woman and little boy where in a situation where their lives where in danger. I wanted to run out with the cross bow the older man was loading and take down as many horses as I could while the family ran for saftey further away from the approaching group.

Sadness:As I sat in a chair scanning each part of a very, very large version of the painting I started to cry. I saw in my head the scene played out as the old man telling the young girl to stay hidden and protect her brother. He with crossbow in hand waited while the troops or group rode by, horses hoves crunching under the weight of the snow. I wondered if they would be safe or if he would have to die to distract the group from finding the children. As the tears poured down my cheeks my vision blured and I was brought back to my chair where I sat in the room staring at the painting.

'''1b.'''The title of the second painting that I used to answer this research question is “A Winter Landcape” painted by Ferdinand Von Wright.

Sensory experiences for 1b.

Expectant: I felt the cold wind of winter bite at my cheeks as I watched the person in the painting approaching the cabin in the woods. lights from the window can be seen as and person standing at the window peers out. I felt the expectancy of the person who was walking towards the cabin in the woods. Wanting and expecting a warm home and shelter from the cold and the snow. I imagagined a friend seeing the person walking up the pathway running to get warm blankets for the firend and then meeting them at the door.

'''2a.''' I felt that all of the artwork at Cygnaeus Gallery signifies the beauty and and history of the finnish culture and identity via the lenses of the artist eyes and views of their own identity as a Finnish artist. Also, the artwork represents what the founder of the museum thought was important and should be showcased.

'''2b. Ideas attaced to the artwork'''

''Finnish history''

''Finnish culture''

''Contributors to development of Finland''

''Military presense inside and outside of Finland''

''Greek Mythogy''

''War''

''Class''

'''3a.'''The size of the museum and the exhibit size at Cygneaus Gallery affected my experiences at the museumby providing me with plenty of quiet and space to relax
withought restricting me by the limited amounts of space avalable and an overload of art to confuse my senses. I was able to relax and enjoy walking around the
rooms while taking notes. The museum only exhibited sixty or more artworks by various artist in the four rooms the artworked was housed, this smallness helped
instead of hindered the development of my research. I was able to spend as much time as I wanted and needed doing my research. As long as the time I was there was within the open and closing hours of the museum.

Comments

This is interesting. I never thought of using sensory for discourse. Awesome job!
