Alumni Panel
Alumni Panel
I was really impressed with the alumni panel today. I feel like I can really keep going and devote myself and my time to media. I was very interested with what Erica said regarding metaphor. She said as long as you understand this traditional way of making films, you’ll have a greater appreciation for the digital editing. I suppose the benefit of understanding metaphors can be said in regards to many things, but somehow I was really moved by that comment. I think it’s because I’m finally beginning to understand my personal role as a filmmaker and the way I compose my work. I need a sort of companion of information—a book or research. Just like digital technology needs a sort companion/metaphor of traditional filmmaking. I need a conceptual metaphor for my work. A couple of weeks ago this question was asked: How do we actually create the foundation, the skills, and knowledge for our fieldwork? And somehow the idea of a preexisting metaphor could seem to be the answer. The idea that research and location scouting is done based on preexisting metaphors of what anthropologists and historians used to do. And now, documentary filmmakers apply the same metaphor to their fieldwork. I suppose the main idea is understanding structure—thus understanding process.
P.S. I really want to see busting out!
