Video Viewing
There are few video intallations in the museum. I found only two. One was for the travelling exhibit for the Quilts of Gee's Bend, the other video, a video on creating posters. I discovered this video in the Textiles gallery, behind closed glass doors. This room has no one in it, its a litle unwelcoming with the closed doors although printed on the glass doors is, "Open to the public, please come in." The video is well done and relatively short. Its played on an apple computer, with sound coming out of the speakers located on either side of it. There is no indication as to what the video is going to be, but I sit down any way to find out. I am the only one watching this video, and if I wasn't, there is only one chair for someone to watch.
This video is in coordination with the travelling exhibit, but is strictly about making textiles, and how they created posters of the quilts from the exhibit. It was a really well done documentation giving you an idea of the process necessary to make posters for exhibits such as these. I found the video enjoyable although i'm pretty sure that very few visitors have seen it. I thought it may be better to have set up another area in which multiple people could view this video if they so chose. I believe would be of particular interest to guests as this video gave us a behind the scenes look at processes in a museum.
I think that the De Young needed to have more video installations. One that would be extremely interesting to guests would have been a documentation of the construction of the De Young. It would be really nice to see a time lapse, and some interviews with the curators and architects. I found out though, that the museum curatorial staff is working on putting together an exhibit about the construciton of the new museum, whether or not this exhibit will feature a video, i am unsure.
