Week Eight Update

So I guess there's only two more weeks to shoot this quarter... I think I can safely say I'll need to pick up footage during the spring, or spring break. It doesn't bother me too badly, as long as the finished piece is anything like what I want it to be. It's been incredibly instructive making a movie from scratch with enough time to really think about reciprocally motivating its formal and thematic aspects, and then trying to make it work in real life, with real schedules and actors and equipment and whatever skills I have or don't have. I'm finding it quite difficult, but I feel that as I keep shooting, I'll get better at realizing the visual style and emotional tone of this piece. That's one of the reasons I expect to be shooting next quarter - I don't expect to be doing that great of a job at it, by my standards, until I see what I've got and what I need. Julian and I are both afraid that our movies are going to turn out to be shit, because of the vagaries of getting them shot. I always hate learning by sucking at something and doing it anyway, but I'm trying to get over it.

In unofficial news I may be collaborating from here on out with Bryce Erlandson, my illustrious former film-making partner. Bryce has been dealing with things that have unfortunately made his own proposed project impossible to complete, something I'm definitely not glad about. But I would be more than glad to work with him again based on our previous experiences, and based on the fact that I've been bemoaning all along the unfertile and uninspired solo approach to producing this movie. I would love to have his participation, but whatever Bryce chooses to do I wish him the best.
