Last Day of Class

So Thursday was the last day of class for me as an undergraduate college student! I can't believe that I am done...well almost. I still have some printing to do, as well as another essay. I can't believe how fast these four years have gone here at Evergreen. So what's the next step? Well graduation which is on June 13th. That's one thing that's super exciting and being there with all my friends and family will be so much fun. On Thursday, on my last day of class, I turned in all my writing assignments that I was responsible for doing throughout the quarter. Since it was a film class, I was required to write a journal entry on every movie that I watched. I wrote about movies like Forrest Gump, American Beauty, and Dumb and Dumber. I think American Beauty is one of my favorite movies, just the play on so many American beliefs and struggles. I thought the way the fail of one's marriage laced in between their daughter's difficult high school years was so well done. Using my French dictionary and the the types of conversations that came up in class throughout the quarter helped me explain what I got out of the different films. I think the type of film that we covered that was most difficult for me to talk about was new wave cinema. This new approach to film from director Jean-Luc Godard, who made it famous, completely changed the way both France and other countries from around the world approached making movies. Movies are good, I like movies, so I was really glad I took this class so that I had the opportunity to work on my French grammar and speaking skills through something other than a textbook.

2 More Weeks

This week was pretty crazy since the end of the year is fast approaching considering there are now2 ½ weeks left of class. For French, I'm writing a paper where I have to compare two films we've seen throughout the quarter. I'm going to write about the difference in themes between a couple movies that I've seen this quarter, but which two movies exactly I haven't completely decided on. I also had an interview this week for a job, and I think it went pretty well considering it lasted three hours long! There was an interview with a panel, the director, and then someone else who works in the office. The good thing is that these folks are going to make decisions pretty fast so I should hear back in the first week of June if I got the job or not. I am getting ready for graduation too which is on June 13th. I have a bunch of family coming from New York and Los Angeles and I am so excited to see all of them, as it has been quite some time since I've seen my family. Graduation is so cool at Evergreen because I know that when I think of a graduation, I think of something in a large auditorium where they just read a bunch of names, while Evergreen's approach is a little different. Last year, as the students came through red square to take their seats professors were blowing bubbles at them, and they were following behind a huge circus act. There were people on stilts and others juggling these rings of fire, while others were drumming away. No matter what ends up happening this year, I know it's going to be something just as fun and exciting as what I've seen in the past, the only difference being that I will be one of those students in cap and gown!

Seattle?

Today was a beautiful day again in Olympia and everyone seemed to be enjoying it. This gave me the chance to go out and explore around town for a place to shoot photography. My sponsor Bob emailed me the other day to ask me when the next time I was available to meet with him so he could see some of my recent work. We'll most likely meet early next week so I need to get back down to the dark room and keep printing. I decided to drive out to Tug Boat Annie's, a restaurant out on the water, where there's some construction going on, as well as bunch of abandoned trucks and work supplies. If all goes according to plan though, I’ll be heading up to Seattle for the weekend to hang out with some friends. They’re from Seattle and want to get out of Olympia for the weekend. It’s so great to be in between Olympia and Seattle, so a cheap bus up to Seattle or down to Portland is not a bad idea. You can take a public bus that’s pretty cheap but takes a couple hours or, like me, find friends with cars that want to go and pay them for gas. If that doesn’t end up working I know there are a couple events going on in downtown Olympia, as there always is! Le Voyeur always has some type of show happening on the weekends, I remember last weekend there was a guy in there with his own mixing boards rapping about sneakers. He wasn’t too bad, too bad there weren’t too many people around at the time to watch him.

All These People!

Today was Freshman Advising Day, so campus was swarmed with tons of new students running around getting acquainted with what would be their new academic setting. I met with many new students that asked me all kinds of questions about what campus was like, as well as questions like what was fun to do in downtown Olympia. My friends Abhi, Holly and I went down to the Greenery, the campus cafeteria, and had hamburgers and hot dogs. The cafeteria just bought a soft serve machine and I know that has been really popular. I think one of the best parts of today was the fact that it was beautiful out and it felt really great to have a ton of sun. It was funny watching all these people stand outside waiting for the computer center to open so they could register for the program they wanted. Most people came out looking excited for getting into their first choice, if not their second as they headed down to lower campus to check out housing. When this one guy came up to me to ask where the housing office was he leaned over and asked me "So what are the chances of me getting a single?" I smiled and laughed a little bit as I told him that there was no need for secrets considering 80% of Evergreen's housing was single occupancy, so it wouldn't be hard for him to get what he wanted. He then asked me about my experience in the dorms and I told him about the great times I had with my friends that lived on my floor, as well as with friends that lived on the floors below and above me. I had a fun day hanging outside and meeting all these people that were excited to be starting college in the fall as new geoducks!
