Cosmopolis

Cosmopolis by Don Delillo was a very unusual book. It told the story of a wealthy businessman who one day decided to gamble on the value of the Japanese yen and lost everything he had. As a result of losing everything that he had, Parker was able to break through the walls of his own indifference and embrace the world around them once more. This entire book took place in one day. Parker woke up on this morning, decided he needed a haircut and proceeded through his day toward that goal. The author takes us through this unusual day while trying to get across New York in a white stretch limousine. Parker meanders through his day conducting business and living life both in and outside his limousine. We learn that Parker the wealthy enough to indulge in his every whim has lost the ability to appreciate the simple things in life. As he loses more and more of his wealth he is able to slowly tune in once again to the world. But at the end of the day he has extracted himself from the corporate executive protective shell and is once again relying on himself for his own existence. This is a truly well-written example of how a story does not have to span the use months or years. That with enough detail an author can depict an entire day and have it fill up a 200 page novel.

The Search

The Search by John Battelle is a fascinating journey through the development of the Search engine. From Archie to Google he explains not only how something was done but also a lot of the reasoning behind it. I was in a computer technical program between 1995 and 1997 and then went to work. I remember using most of the search tools Battele writes about, but I had not idea what was going on behind the scenes. At the time I had no idea what was causing the dot com implosion that would eventually impact my life so dramatically. This book has answered many of those questions as well as given me insight into the world of the startup company. Being well written but not over technical I would recommend it to anyone interested in technology to read it.

Cyber Cinderella

This was a very unique book. Though not one I would typically read. I am relieved that having run a google search on Myself that no website other than my own come up. This was a bit of a creepy storyline, a little too close to reality with the Cyber Stalking theme. I did enjoy that positive part of the storyline, when Izobel was able to see her life for what it was and then to change it toward what she wanted.

Revolution in the Valley

What a fascinating book. Andy Hertzfeld takes the reader on a historic narrative of the early Macintosh development. He does this through a collection of short stories written by himself and others who were a part of it. I learned about the PC/Windows side of personal computers as a computer technician. Hertzfeld’s book has now given me a better understanding of the Macintosh side and its impact on the personal computer. I whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in the evolution of today’s computers.
