Research

India.  My research in the North Indian Himalayas examined local and expert knowledge systems about forest resources; ways that movement and verticality shaped people's knowledge; and gender specific knowledges and work.  The research also considered various development projects in the area such as dam construction, road building, slate quarrying and cement factories in the Himalayas, and local environmentalist responses to these efforts.  I also learned about local efforts to build sustainable communities, and the intersections between activism and spirituality.

Ozarks.  Research on women of the Ozark National Scenic Riverway region was sponsored by the National Park Service.  I researched and wrote a cultural history of the area that included a look at women's roles in work, family, religion, community and more.  The project included many oral histories with women of all ages in the area of the Current and Jacks Fork Rivers.

Alaska.  My work in Alaska included researching and writing a cultural history of Dena'ina Athabascans and other Native groups around Lake Clark National Park and Preserve.  The project focused on land and resource use, subsistence practices, family, work and culture.
