Travel

Students will be traveling to France with the program Spring Quarter (along with some additional students from the Evening French classes). All participating students must have current passports prior to the trip, and should consider investing in a good guide book (e.g. "Let's Go France").

There is a recommended Language School in Brittany.

Students should be working on Pilgrimage ideas. Lindsay has started a Travel Blog Site to facilitate conversations about ideas, issues, concerns, etc.

Seminar in Renaissance, Baroque and Classical Literature and Symbology: "Paradox of Selfhood"

Thursdays, 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm

Requirements of this quarter's seminar are the following:

Attend all classes, participate in small group work, and contribute to discussion and reporting in the larger group.
Keep an Intellectual Journal, a record of your own intellectual journey, of coming to terms with each reading for seminar, and relating it to other program materials. In this journal, include, weekly, at least:

2 - 3 pages of notes (a great aide to your end of quarter exam writing)

Winter quarter history seminar assignments

Seminar will be worth 3 credits this quarter. Besides weekly participation, students will write one 4-5 page synthesis paper incorporating ideas from both program lectures and seminar readings. The exact topic for this paper will be distributed week 3. Papers are due at 1pm on Thursday of week 5, February 7, 2008. No late papers will be accepted. Failure to complete the paper will result in the loss of all 3 seminar credits.

This quarter we will explore the reactions of common French men and women to the political, religious, intellectual and cultural turbulence of the 16^th and 17^th centuries. What were the links between popular violence, riots, witch hunts, exorcisms, the rise of print culture, and the Reformation, the Wars of Religion, and the intellectual and cultural renaissance? How did notions of political power, social order and social control change in the face of royal absolutism, humanism, and growing urbanization?
