Available Software In Assistive Technology Lab

Training and troubleshooting services available for students with special needs:

OpenBook 7.0 (most recent available version)
Assists students with limited vision, hearing impairments and learning disabilities access many document types. OpenBook allows you to convert printed documents or graphic based text into an electronic text format using accurate optical character recognition and quality speech.
Uses: Textbook reader, syllabus and handout reader with scanner, magnification of text, user can select audio language and human-sounding voice that can help enhance your reading experience. OpenBook also supports most hardware speech synthesizers.
Other new features in OpenBook 7.02 include a fax utility, copy function and online book search. All OCR engines included with OpenBook have been updated to provide the best text conversion and page recognition available.

WYNN (most recent available version)
WYNN is an innovative literacy software tool designed to assist students with reading challenges such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and aphasia.
Uses: This software is used to read back text from books, MS Word, or Internet articles. Text book reader, syllabus and handout reader with scanner, magnification of text, user can select audio language and a human-sounding voice to enhance reading experience.

JAWS 7.0 (most recent available version)
Screen reading software that gives blind, visually impaired and otherwise print challenged students access to their screen by using speech synthesizer output. Jaws stands for Job Access With Speech. This software can be adjusted for individual needs and uses and has many hotkey options for limited keystrokes.
Uses: Allows for greater accuracy when reading menu items and Internet pages, which is useful for users who like to customize the Windows system colors for increases visibility. JAWS also outputs to refreshable braille displays and complements most windows-based applications.

ZoomText 9.0 (most recent available version)
ZoomText increases the availability for digital documents to be read, seen or navigated easier. Font magnification allows students with visual impairments to recognize text, tables and graphs effortlessly. Easier navigations on the screen allows students to locate and follow the control focus when they tab and arrow key through menus, dialogs, tool bars, and other application controls.
Uses: Adjustable screen magnification assists with surfing the web, creating a document or mailing instructors or classmates. ZoomText allows students with limited vision to see, hear and use all of their applications with greater access. Speech synthesizers allow students’ documents to be read aloud by a friendly human-sounding voice - right through computer's speakers.




Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8.0 (9.0 just came out this year)
Dragon NaturallySpeaking assists students with limited motor skills become able to complete class assignments and can create notes in many styles and forms and can communicate with instructors and can participate in online discussions very easily.
Uses: Assignment creation and communication are made substantially better for students with disabilities. Students can dictate into virtually any windows-based applications at speeds up to 160 words per minute at a higher level of accuracy.

Dyslexiwrite 2.16 (most recent available version)
Integrated DyslexiWrite combines word suggestions, voice, and a dyslexia-oriented spell check in one easy-to-use program. Integrated DyslexiWrite is tailor-made for those with limited computer experience, as well as advanced computer users.
Uses: Helps students with learning disabilities write papers better and faster with word prediction and commonly misspelled words automatically adjusted as the student types.

Inspiration 8
A tool that assists students with visual learning and is an essential tool for students with mobility and learning disabilities. Students can plan, research and complete projects successfully with this software.
Uses: Students can easily create and organize thoughts and plans with on screen integrated diagrams and outline views, which help create graphic organizers, develop ideas, and expand topics into writing. As a result, students gain and retain a better understanding of concepts and demonstrate knowledge, improving their performance across the curriculum.
