I am a second quarter, first year, first generation, student at TESC and I love to watch the discussions on this list. I do not agree with everything said but the fact that a discussion of such current events can be viewed and discussed openly is AWESOME. I can see that some chatters get way to upset at other peoples ideals and beliefs, but I think these discussions have broadened my understanding of current issues by thinking about how I relate to the information in discussion. Please keep it going, possibly a couple ground considerations should be sent with every TESC Talk message that the opinions stated are those of the writer and that profanity and personal attacks are are not encouraged. also the site supervisor or someone whom can answer questions or concerns about this list.

While I am very much in support of the sharing of ideas and discussing current events.  From what I have read when discussions do occur, many people show little to no respect for others viewpoints and are at times blatantly rude towards the writers person.  After the incident relating to the graphity of swastikas on campus there were many comments relating to whether or not it was a hate sign or if those responsible meant it in a derogatory manner.  But the point of Evergreen's community is to be accepting of others differences and to support them even if you don't understand their believes.  I feel that in this incident in particular we as a community failed to respect the situation that had occured especially the feelings of students and staff who are Jewish and while I feel that group learning is important, I also have seen where the online discussion is not allowing a unity it is tearing the unity that has occured apart.  This online discussion would ideally be a way to get students who are quieter to share what they learn, but that will not happen with the attitudes that currently are occuring as debating an idea is very different then tearing apart an idea or the person sharing an idea.

I am glad that it was tried, but I think that it does more harm then good.  Not only to individuals trying to better understand the things they are taught, but also to our community at Evergreen that is trying to encourage diversity and support it.

 Thanks

Very good, especially a central place for complaints. However, a caution:  Please see the Feb. 1 posting on TESC Talk from  "Sword, Jonathan" <swojon12@evergreen.edu> In that posting he serves to undermine the goal of Evergreen only by forwarding an inflammatory letter about Evergreen, a letter with no name or identity.  Recommendation:  Web links OK, but forwarded off-campus letters not OK.
