Rosetta Stone

The Language Lab has Rosetta Stone software for German Levels 1 and 2. Learn to speak, read, and write on your own or supplement your textbook with this total immersion program. We have only one license for each level, so call (360) 867-7020 to reserve a computer, or contact a lab aide via email.

FAZ.NET

FAZ.NET is a great online source for German, European, and International news. The website has just about every news category imaginable with easy navigation between different sections. The website also contains an online version of the Frankfurt based Rhein-Main Zeitung. The Rhein-Main Zeitung is only one of many different news sources based in Frankfurt - many others may be found on the Rhein-Main Media page. These sites will be useful to those who are nearly fluent in German, or are capable of understanding very advanced writing.

Fodor's Useful Phrases for Travel

Fodor's Travel Guide has created an online phrasebook of useful expressions.  Click on a language and select the kinds of phrases you'd like to work on such as greetings or dining out.  Listen to sound files to perfect your pronunciation, and you'll know how to find a bathroom in no time.

Internet Polyglot

Internet Polyglot is an online flashcard system which uses games and drills designed to help you retain vocabulary.  Build your own lessons, steal from other users, or use the ready-made sets.

Language Guide

Language Guide introduces language learners to vocabulary through sound, pictures, and writing so that every new term is reinforced visually and aurally. If you are just starting out or want to supplement the vocabulary in your textbook, the clustering of the vocabulary into categories like numbers or body parts makes it easy for you to find what you want to work on.

Omniglot

Visit Omniglot for information about the writing system for this language and many others, including designed languages like Klingon. Each page includes the full alphabet or syllabary for a particular language, plus a pronunciation guide in the International Phonetic Alphabet and transliterations of sample text into the Roman alphabet.

Phonetics

Flash animation of the phonetics of American English, German, and Spanish created at the University of Iowa.  Click on a language and hear all the sounds pronounced alone and within the context of words.  Features an animated anatomical drawing of the mouth, so you'll know exactly where to put your tongue to make those tricky sounds, and plays video of a native speaker using the sounds in context.

Multilingual Books in Seattle has a list of podcasts available for Chinese, French, German, and Spanish. Educational programming is available so you can take classes on your mp3 player, or you can listen to news, culture, technology, or entertainment-themed shows. Immerse yourself in language and culture to increase your comprehension and hear the language in real life speech.
