Readings

There's a new system we'll be using for downloading readings during Spring Quarter. It's the College's electronic reserve system called "Ares" To go there directly, CLICK HERE

To get to a particular reading, just click on the title below. This will take you to the "Ares Login Page." The first time you do this you will need create an Ares account. Just click on the "create account" link and fill in the form that comes up. Here are some tips about how to fill in the form:

  • "user name": use your regular Evergreen one, what comes before "@evergreen.edu" in your evergreen email
  • "First/Last name": use what's on your TESC student ID
  • "Library ID" use your TESC student number, the one that starts with A0xxxxx
  • email address: use the one you check most often
  • "status": undergraduate
  • "department": doesn't matter; leave it alone or choose "other"
  • "default class email subscriptions": ignore this. It doesn't do anything

Once you have created your account you'll get a screen with a link called "Search Classes" under "Student Tools" in the menu. Click on that and it well let you "Search by Instructor"; find "TOUGAS" in the drop-down menu, and then click on "GO". This should take you to a screen where you can "Add Class" for the Practice of Community. Then you should be able to to back to the "Main Menu" and see all the readings that are avialable to the class.

If you have any trouble logging on or downloading readings, let Joe or Marja know right away. (Some people have trouble if they are not using Firefox as their web browser.)

Readings for May 23:

Read for May 9: Stumbling Toward Justice (selection) NOTE: this reading begins with a short quotation which contains a racial slur. The author of the quotation and of the book are using this word for an anti-racist purpose, but reading the quotation may still be upsetting for many (and rightly so). We will talk about this in class.

Read for April 25: Good Work (selection)

Read for April 11th class meeting:

The Namesake, by Jhumpa Lahiri (selection).

You may have seen the film based on this novel. If not, you might want to rent it to get the overall setting of this selection. In any case, read this selection VERY CAREFULLY, paying special attention to how the author uses ethnographic detail to convey the complexity of the lives of the characters.

During spring, besides the new short readings, we'll also be looking back on some things we used in fall and winter. Begin with Writing Ethnographic Fieldnotes, paying special attention to the last sections about writing up observations.
